Software testing challenge for school kids at Creative Café event

Rhodri writes about how we coordinated a testing challenge for secondary school children as part of the Big Bang Fair in Eastbourne.

Earlier this year we were privileged to be asked to take part in a Creative Café workshop as part of the Big Bang Fair in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

Creative Cafés are an initiative developed by Culture Shift aiming to connect young people to creative and digital industry professionals. The sessions are high-energy, dynamic events where young people can meet and be inspired by professionals providing practical career inspiration in a creative and engaging format.

Throughout the day, we coordinated a testing challenge for four groups of secondary school children. Aged between 11 and 17 years old – each session was with a different school from the local area. We wanted to provide them with some real practical experience of software testing, so we tasked them with finding as many bugs as they could in a purpose built website (the very same website we use here as an interview assessment for testing role applicants).

Working in pairs, the groups had access to a range of Zoonou’s desktop, mobile and tablet devices, enabling them to carry out both Functional and Compatibility testing. We also set up online issue tracking projects for each session, to allow the participants to raise bug reports  – much like the team does here at Zoonou.

It was pleasantly surprising to see such keen engagement with software testing and enthusiasm from the young people involved. Some of them could very well be the testers of the future…
