We’re now a Disability Confident Employer (Level 2!)

News Team

Over the past year, I’ve been leading our work towards Disability Confident Level 2, and I’m thrilled to share that we officially achieved it in December!

Our journey started back in February 2025, when we became a Disability Confident Committed (Level 1) employer. Since then, we’ve spent the past 10 months building on that foundation, reviewing our practices, and making practical changes to ensure all our team members can thrive.

So, what is Disability Confident?

It’s a UK government scheme designed to support employers to recruit, retain, and develop disabled people. The aim is simple: make workplaces more inclusive, reduce the disability employment gap, and give everyone the support they need to do their best work.

There are three levels:

  • Committed (Level 1)
  • Employer (Level 2)
  • Leader (Level 3)

Membership lasts three years per level, and moving up encourages organisations to embed inclusion deeply and stay accountable.

Why this matters to us

Inclusion and accessibility are part of how we operate every day. We help our clients build accessible digital products and experiences, and we want to live those same values internally.

For me personally, it’s about making sure every person at Zoonou feels supported, heard, and included. That might mean reviewing our recruitment process, thinking about accessibility, offering well-being support, or simply having the right conversations. Inclusion isn’t a one-off project - it’s part of everything we do.

Some of the things we've done this year

As part of achieving Level 2, we looked closely at how we work and asked ourselves where we could make our processes and culture more inclusive. Here are some of the changes we’ve made:

Reviewed our recruitment process

We looked at ways we could make it more transparent and inclusive. We now remove identifying information from CVs, have applications independently reviewed by two team members, and use a scoring matrix to keep things fair while still getting a rounded view of each candidate. We also advertise roles on platforms like Patchwork Hub to reach disabled candidates more effectively.

Strengthened well-being and support

We now have four trained Mental Health First Aiders, Mental Health Awareness and Menopause awareness training for our senior management team.

And we introduced Wellness Action Plans to give everyone a space to work with their line manager to discuss adjustments that could make their working environment more comfortable and supportive.

Improved workplace accessibility

We’re working towards RNIB Visibly Better Employer accreditation to make sure our commitment to accessibility is tangible and ongoing.

These initiatives are part of the ongoing work we do at Zoonou, similar to our Period Dignity work and other programmes designed to ensure every employee feels supported and included.

What's next

We’ll continue reviewing and improving our practices, so we not only meet Level 2 standards but go beyond them. Over the next three years, our goal is to become a Disability Confident Leader (Level 3) while keeping inclusion embedded in our culture every single day.

I’m proud of the work our team has done and excited to keep learning and improving as we go.
