From commitment to action: we’re now a RNIB Visibly Better Employer
On Purple Tuesday last year, we committed to taking our support for co-owners with visual impairments further.
This led us to work towards becoming a Visibly Better Employer with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) - enhancing the inclusive practices we already have.
Today, I’m proud to say we’ve achieved that goal.
Zoonou has officially been awarded the RNIB Visibly Better Employer (VBE) standard - a recognition of our commitment to building a workplace where everyone, including people who are blind or partially sighted, can contribute, thrive, and feel valued.
The journey from commitment to certification was a real team effort, led by Ashleigh, who steered the process from start to finish. It began with a conversation with RNIB in November 2025 to explore what the standard would involve. Over the following months, Ashleigh led the team to complete the VBE assessment, review and improve processes, and discuss practices with RNIB - covering recruitment, reasonable adjustments, accessible documentation, equipment, and career development.
RNIB highlighted our inclusive job ads, learning culture, and commitment to supporting colleagues, alongside a few minor improvements, like extra line manager training and tweaks to the careers page.
Ashleigh reflected on the process:
“It felt like a genuinely collaborative experience working with the RNIB. Having a dedicated point of contact throughout made the conversations more personal and meaningful, and the feedback we received was tailored to the practices we already have in place.”
Roy Imeson, Employment Advisor, at the RNIB said:
“Zoonou has demonstrated strong readiness for inclusion, with well-developed reasonable adjustment practices and an accessible, WCAG-aligned careers page. I look forward to continuing our work with Ashleigh and her team, and I encourage anyone, especially those with a protected characteristic, to explore Zoonou’s careers page and learn more about the opportunities available.”
Examples from co-owners like Neil helped ensure our improvements were practical. Reflecting on his experience joining Zoonou, he shared:
“From my very first enquiry about the vacancy, I got a clear impression that the company took accessibility seriously. The interview process was carried out remotely, and they checked in advance that the platforms being used were accessible for me, even giving me a choice of which to use. After I was successful, that support continued, with regular communication and questions about any accessibility needs I might have, prior to my start date. That included checking ahead of a company away day I was due to attend soon after joining, which made me feel considered and supported from the start, and that level of support has carried on since I joined.”
It’s one thing to have policies in place, but it’s another to see them truly work in day-to-day life.
This accreditation isn’t about a badge – it’s about how we do things at Zoonou. Accessibility is embedded in everything we do, ensuring everyone can contribute, feel supported, and reach their potential.
