Accessibility certification that recognises progress

Good accessibility is built over time. Our certification recognises meaningful progress - not just compliance - giving you a trusted way to demonstrate the work you've done and the commitment you've made.

Accessibility is more than compliance

Compliance matters. For many organisations, demonstrating that their digital services meet WCAG 2.2 AA is an important part of their accessibility journey. It provides confidence for customers, stakeholders and procurement teams.

But accessibility is about more than meeting technical requirements. It's about understanding people's needs, removing barriers and creating digital experiences that work better for everyone.

Certification should recognise the work behind those improvements - the decisions, changes and commitments that help make digital experiences more inclusive.

How certification works

Every certification starts with an independent accessibility audit. We assess your website, product or digital service against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA success criteria, using the findings to determine the certification level that best reflects your current accessibility progress and conformance with the WCAG guidelines.

Certification is valid for 12 months, recognising that digital services and user needs evolve and accessibility should be reviewed regularly.

Recognising different stages of accessibility progress

Whether you're beginning to understand accessibility barriers, demonstrating WCAG conformance, or validating your service with disabled users, each certification level provides clear recognition of your progress.

Level One: Accessibility Commitment

You've taken the important first step: understanding where accessibility barriers exist and committing to address them. This level recognises organisations that have completed an independent accessibility audit and are actively working towards WCAG 2.2 AA.

Level Two: Accessibility Certification

Your digital service achieved WCAG 2.2 AA conformance through independent accessibility assessment. This level provides evidence that accessibility has been considered throughout your digital experience and gives customers, stakeholders and procurement teams confidence in your approach.

Level Three: Accessibility Certification Plus

You've gone beyond technical assessment by validating your digital experience with disabled users. This level recognises organisations that have combined WCAG 2.2 AA conformance with real user feedback, helping ensure accessibility works in practice as well as in theory.

Your questions answered

Why is independent accessibility certification important?

Accessibility certification gives you a clear, independent way to demonstrate the work you've done to make your digital services more inclusive. For some organisations, this helps provide evidence during procurement processes and tenders. For others, it's about showing customers, users and internal teams that accessibility is being taken seriously.

Most importantly, it recognises that creating accessible experiences takes ongoing effort - not just a one-off check.

Is accessibility certification the same as WCAG compliance?

No. WCAG 2.2 AA conformance is an important part of accessibility, but accessibility is about more than meeting technical requirements.

Our certification recognises different stages of progress - from organisations working towards WCAG 2.2 AA conformance through to those that have achieved conformance and validated their service with disabled users.

Do I need to meet WCAG 2.2 AA to become certified?

No. Our certification recognises different stages of accessibility progress. The first certification level recognises organisations that have completed an accessibility audit, understand where barriers exist and are actively working towards improvements.

Why does level three include disabled user testing?

Accessibility standards help identify many barriers, but they don't replace the experiences of disabled people using your service. Disabled user testing provides insight into how people experience your digital service in practice and helps validate whether accessibility improvements are working for the people who need them.

How long does accessibility certification last?

Certification is valid for 12 months.

Digital services change, content is updated and user needs evolve. Regular review helps ensure accessibility remains part of how your experiences are designed, maintained and improved.

Can accessibility certification help with procurement and tenders?

Yes. Many organisations need to demonstrate their approach to accessibility as part of procurement processes, supplier assessments and tender responses.

For public sector organisations and suppliers, accessibility is also an important part of meeting the expectations set out in the Government Service Standard and GDS service assessments. Certification provides independent evidence of your accessibility work and helps demonstrate your commitment to creating inclusive digital services.
